Before this sound troubleshooting guide is used

Conduct a full verification of system performance in accordance with the installation instructions.
This includes, but is not limited to, confirming:
Correct refrigerant charge
Proper indoor airflow
Appropriate voltages and electrical conditions
Any other performance metrics required by the installation manual
The troubleshooting steps in the guide below were written with the assumption that system performance has already been fully verified.
Please note that a Sound Complaint Checklist must be submitted along with this Sound Troubleshooting Guide.

When should this sound troubleshooting guide be used

Operate the unit under the same conditions in which the customer-reported noise occurs.
If the noise is not steady, constant, and repeatable, this guide may not apply.
Transient noises—such as those caused by a reversing valve, contactor engagement, or TXV chatter—must be identified and resolved before completing this checklist. These short‑duration sounds are not considered steady operational noise and should be addressed separately.

Turn the unit off. And disconnect compressor from the contactor. *

With the compressor disconnected: is the complaint still present? *

Disconnect the fan motor. Reconnect the compressor to the contactor. *

With the fan disconnected: is the complaint still present? *

Reconnect the outdoor fan motor to the contactor. Turn the unit on. *

Motor Vibration

Feel the motor plate & side of the unit’s top cover

a) Motor plate vibration indicates possible fan misalignment
b) Side edge vibration indicates blade imbalance.

Is the motor plate vibrating more than the side edge of the top cover? *

Condenser fan blade

After replacing the fan blade, is the complaint still present? *

Complaint still present

Replace the condenser fan motor. *

Fan blade position

a) Shift position of the fan blade up on the shaft.

b) Ensure that the fan blade will still rotate freely.

After adjusting fan blade position, is the complaint still present? *

Turn the unit off.

Reconnect the outdoor fan motor to contactor. *

Listen to the noise from inside the house.

Is the noise worse inside than outside? *

Noise origin

Does the noise seem to be coming from the line set itself? *

Install an inline liquid line muffler.

After installing an inline liquid line muffler, is the complaint still present? *

Line set vibration

Does the noise seem to be coming from the line set vibrating against a wall or duct? *

Isolation hangers

Use isolation hangers near the point(s) of contact to reduce the vibration.

After installing isolation hangers, is the complaint still present? *

Source of the noise

Does the noise seem to be coming through the ductwork or directly from the indoor unit? *

Indoor unit

Diagnose and replace the indoor unit component causing the noise. *

Chassis or accessory noise

Does the noise seem to be coming from a rattling grille, panel, or louver? *

Unit fasteners and level

Verify all screws are tight and the unit is level.

After verifying fasteners and unit level, is the complaint still present? *

Unit chassis shifting

Apply sideways pressure to the unit, slightly lifting base pan off its support.

Does applying sideways pressure to the unit affect the complaint? *

Rubber isolation pads

Place rubber isolation pads under the base pan on all four corners of the unit.

After installing rubber isolation pads, is the complaint still present? *

Service valves / lines isolation

a) Remove the four (4) mounting screws to release both service valves from the base pan.

b) Apply pressure on the line-set between the unit and the wall pass-through

Does isolating the service valves / lines affect the complaint? *

Line – mass damper

Place rubber mass damper on the line-set between the unit and the wall pass-through.

With the mass damper installed, is the complaint still present? *

Orientation & connection

Which diagram above best describes the application? *

Extending refrigerant piping

Rotate the unit 90° and extend piping. *

Application A will be rotated CCW to end up as C. Application B on the other hand must be rotated CW to end up as D.

With the unit rotated, is the complaint still present? *

Compressor support

a) Turn the unit off

b) Release the compressor feet from the base pan by removing the four (4) mounting screws

Release compressor support. *

Did releasing the compressor screws affect the complaint? *

Changing grommets

a) Turn unit off

b) Change to split-post compressor grommets [order 4 @ KA75UG100]

Replace compressor grommets. *

Turn unit on

With new grommets, is the complaint still present? *

Re-torque compressor bolts

Factory spec. for compressor bolt is 90 in-lb

Re-torque compressor bolts. *

Sound shield/blanket

a) Turn unit off

b) Install sound shield. Review product data for the unit for the correct accessory part number for the unit

If a sound shield/blanket is already installed, change to the miter box model

Install sound shield / sound blanket. *
